Dhirubhai Ambani Family11/16/2020
A man with no family fortune, no other type of wealth in hand, and no significant savings went on to become one of the biggest business houses in India which made Dhirubhai Ambani an inspiration for many. His family migrated to Aden, where he initially worked as a gas-station attendant, and later as a clerk at A.Besse Co. His journey from a gas station attendant to the owner of the giant petrochemicals, communications, power, and textiles conglomerate has inspired generations. In his third year in the school, he was elected general secretary of the Junagarh Students Union.
The Indian Independence Act passed by the British Parliament required the Nawab to merge his state with the Indian Union but the Nawab did not agree to that. All rallies were banned and flying the Indian national flag was outlawed. Dhirubhai decided to defy the ban as he called a meeting of all Junagarh students at a school ground where a flag hoisting ceremony was held with big fanfare. He was summoned to the nearby police station but seeing how young he was the police did not think it would be right to charge him. He was questioned for several hours, threatened and pushed around but was allowed to return to the boarding house late in the night. Dhirubhai, still in his teens, joined the movement rallying a team of students to write patriotic slogans on the town walls. He carried banned newspapers like Janmabhoomi and Navajeevan hidden under his shirt for rebel leaders, and distributed leaflets concealed in his school bag. As the popular movement became impossible to crush, the Nawab one night secretly fled to Pakistan and soon after, Junagarh joined the Indian Union. Sardar Patel came to Junagarh that day and addressed a huge public meeting on the Bahauddin College ground. I had washed, starched and pressed my half pant and shirt the night before, polished my worn-out shoes and borrowed a new pair of boy scout socks from a classmate to turn out in my best attire to receive the Sardar. I pushed through the dense crowd at the meeting ground to be close to the dais hoping to catch the Sardars eyes. Obviously, I couldnt succeed in that but I was thrilled enough to have reached so close to him. ![]() Negotiations were held with the eldest who agreed on behalf of other partners to sell the mill for Rs 3 lakh. He even took a token amount of a few thousands of rupees as advance. You keep your juna dabla (old tin), Dhirubhai had then snorted, and the advance too. Although one of his friends took him to yet another mill at Ambernath, he no longer liked the idea of acquiring an old one. That was the first time I decided that whatever I ever build, I would always have the best and the most advanced in technology, come what may and whatever be the cost, he later said. When he breathed his last in 2002, Dhirubhai Ambani he was ranked by Forbes as the worlds 138th-richest person, with an estimated net worth of 2.9 billion.
